Shoulder pain gets into everything: lifting, training, sleeping, even reaching for a seatbelt. Shoulders are the main focus of my clinical work, whether the problem started in the gym, on the mats, at a desk or for no obvious reason at all.
Your first appointment starts with working out why your shoulder hurts. From there, we build a plan around what you want to get back to.

Who this is for
-
Gym-goers and lifters: pain when pressing overhead, benching or doing pull-ups.
-
BJJ, grappling and contact sports: I train BJJ myself, so I know how much these sports ask of the shoulder.
-
Desk workers: aching across the neck and tops of the shoulders after long days at a screen. See also Undo the Desk.
-
Older adults: a shoulder that has become stiff or painful, making it hard to get dressed, reach up or sleep on that side.

Common reasons people book
-
Pain when lifting your arm, especially above shoulder height
-
Pain, catching or weakness when pressing, pulling or carrying
-
A shoulder that aches at night or when you lie on it
-
Stiffness that limits how far you can reach
-
Getting back to the gym or sport after a shoulder injury

Your first appointment
-
We talk it through. How it started, what makes it worse, and what you want to get back to.
-
I assess your shoulder. Movement, strength and specific tests to work out what is driving the pain. I also check your neck and upper back, as they can play a part.
-
Treatment. Hands-on work where it helps, and two or three exercises to start at home.
-
You leave with a plan. What to do between sessions, roughly how many sessions to expect, and when to come back.

Treatment options
Depending on what I find, treatment can include:
-
Exercise-based rehabilitation to rebuild strength and range of movement
-
Soft tissue therapy: deep tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy and manual stretching
-
Shockwave therapy for some longer-standing tendon problems
